Sandy gravel strata is typically mechanically unstable, with great adverse effects on shield tunneling construction processes. Such strata require high-performance shield tunneling machines and strict management of shield tunneling parameters. During shield tunneling construction in Contract Section 16 of the civil works of Urumqi Metro Line 1, the main parameters of shield tunneling such as soil pressure, cutter torque and grouting volume were analyzed and strictly controlled during construction to ensure the success of the shield tunneling process. This successful experience has certain guiding significance for shield tunneling construction in similar strata in the future, and provides mature source of experience for rail transit projects in Urumqi.
