The influence of urban tunnel excavation on the surrounding environment includes many aspects. The most commonly-seen of these are effects on urban underground pipelines, or even damaged to these due to excessive deformation in severe cases. Urban underground tunnel excavation can cause surrounding soil settlement, the resulting sedimentation field surrounding pipelines causes a certain amount of deformation and bending stress. If this settlement deformation or bending stress exceeds the pipelines's tolerances, then cracks, misplacement and water seepage may result. Therefore, before tunnel construction, it is necessary to first study the deformation rules of earth surfaces and soil in the strata that will surrounding shield tunneling works, in order to accurately predict the stress on and deformation of pipelines, and comprehensively consider the uses, dates of laying, materials, structure, joint type and other factors, of these pipelines, and to analyze the influence tunnel construction is likely to have upon them. It is also necessary to apply proper technical solutions and take emergency measures during tunnel construction and formulate appropriate construction standards to ensure the safety of pipelines.
